The Power of Joy

Writer: Josie SavitskiJosie Savitski

We talk a lot about discipline, consistency, and pushing through challenges in our health and wellness journeys. And while those things are important, there’s one crucial element that often gets overlooked: joy.

If your workouts feel like punishment, if your meals feel like deprivation, if your wellness routine is a list of obligations rather than experiences that light you up—you’re missing out on one of the most powerful motivators out there: fun.

At this point in the 75 Rogue Challenge, you've stuck with it. You are officially over the hump. Odds are, you've got some fairly solid habits down. Now might be the time you reappraise what you are doing, and most importantly, why. Let's dive into the importance of joy within your health and wellness, and how you can use it to stay motivated and disciplined.

Why Joy Matters in Health & Wellness

  1. Sustainability Over Suffering – If you dread every workout or meal plan, how long do you think you’ll stick with it? Joy makes health practices sustainable. When you genuinely enjoy what you’re doing, it stops feeling like a chore and starts becoming part of your lifestyle. And, I get it. Not every workout is going to feel like a million bucks. That's where the joy in the process comes into play...keep reading for more on that!

  2. Stress Reduction & Recovery – Enjoyable movement, social connections, and pleasurable activities all play a role in reducing stress. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which can interfere with sleep, digestion, and overall well-being. Finding joy in your wellness routine helps balance this out, by causing your brain to circulate happy hormones (think: "runner's high", or that "post-yoga glow").

  3. Intrinsic Motivation – While external goals like weight loss or PRs are great, they aren’t always enough to keep you going. When you find joy in the process, you don’t need as much willpower to keep showing up—it becomes something you want to do.

Finding joy in your health and wellness journey doesn’t mean ignoring discipline or effort—it means making space for activities that make you feel alive and engaged. When you actively seek enjoyment in your routine, healthy choices become something you look forward to, rather than something you have to force yourself through. So, how can you inject more fun into your daily habits?

Ways to Bring More Fun Into Your Routine

  • Move in a way that excites you. Love dancing? Hiking? Playing a sport? Find a movement practice that sparks joy rather than feels like a checkbox. Even doing this activity every now and then can remind you why you do the hard stuff: to keep doing the fun stuff!

  • Eat foods you actually enjoy. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be bland or restrictive. Experiment with flavors, find new recipes, and savor your meals. If you want more guidance on this, I am always down to chat!

  • Gamify your progress. Set playful challenges, celebrate small wins, and make your progress something to look forward to. Helloooo 75 Rogue!

  • Surround yourself with a community that lifts you up. Joy is contagious. Being around people who inspire and support you makes the journey that much more fun. Hmm, if only you had a place you go to work out with people who uplift, support and inspire you... ;)

  • Give yourself permission to play. Adults need play just as much as kids do. Try new activities, laugh more, and let yourself be curious.

The Takeaway

You don’t have to suffer your way to better health. When you prioritize joy, you’re more likely to stick with your habits, reduce stress, and actually enjoy the process—which is the whole point, isn’t it?
